Working Higher – a solution to workforce development
Cogent is supporting the development and roll-out of modular, work-based foundation degrees for the chemical, polymer, petroleum, bioscience and nuclear industries. The Foundation Degree framework is aimed at up-skilling existing staff in a technical role.  Foundation Degree Forward’s is recognized as an advisory partner.

Working Higher is a collaborative project with the Physical Science Centre and the University of Hull. Funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) under their Employer Engagement Fund, it aims to develop a suite of flexible, work-based Foundation Degrees in partnership with a University consortium and employers.


Working Higher Consortium
The universities chosen to deliver the Working Higher project are:

  • Refining and Petrochemicals Industry - University of Hull
  • Nuclear Industry – University of Central Lancashire
  • Chemical Industry - Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Polymers Industry - London Metropolitan University in partnership with Napier University
  • Biosciences/Pharmaceutical Industry - University of Kent
