Brian P Murphy
Research and Science Director
In 2007 Dr Brian Murphy was appointed as Research Director to
Cogent – the Sector Skills Council which represents a number of science- and
engineering-using sectors of manufacturing: Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals,
Nuclear, Petroleum, Polymers, Oil and Gas.
In addition to leading the Cogent labour market research team, Brian
also has a special responsibility to build higher level skills capacity and
capability through engagement with Higher Education. Prior to Cogent, Brian has
extensive academic credentials, most recently as Head of Chemistry and
Materials at Manchester Metropolitan University
where he led one of the largest workforce development schemes in Chemistry and
Materials in the UK. In a career spanning over two decades, Brian
has worked in a broad sector of other institutions in the UK and Australia, a
consistent thread of which is the application of skills to a variety of
workplace and business interests: be it research in clean extraction methods
for the metals industry; as an External Examiner for work-based learning
programmes; as a provider of higher level skills. Brian has approaching one
hundred papers in subject research, learning and teaching, and labour market
information.

Caroline Sudworth
Science and Higher Level Skills Manager
Dr Caroline Sudworth joined Cogent as the Science and Higher Level Skills Development Manager in 2008. Caroline joined Cogent from her previous position as Business Development Manager for the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University, where she was responsible for developing the strategy for business engagement within the Higher Education Sector, developing strong partnerships and delivering key routes to market for greater business and community engagement programmes.
Prior to this, Caroline was the Research Director of Lasers for Life an independent charitable organisation (based in Liverpool) that focused on the research and development of light technologies within medicine and emerging technologies. Crucially, this involved working in partnership with academics, clinicians and industries based within science, medicine, pharmaceuticals and engineering. Caroline has wide experience in research and lecturing within Higher Education, particularly for the delivery of training and research programmes to those based in physical and life sciences, medicine and engineering. This followed on from a number of post-doctoral research posts at Lasers for Life and the University of Leeds concentrating on non-ionising radiation techniques for detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Caroline was awarded her PhD from the School of Medicine in 2002 and MPhys from the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy in 1999, both of the University of Leeds. At Cogent, Caroline is responsible for the identification, development and delivery of employer led high level skills across the industry sectors. The Cogent higher level skills strategy, Technically Higher, was recently published by Caroline in December 2009. In her role, Caroline focuses on national and regional policy, developing good working practice between industry and training and education providers, and leads on STEM and Innovation activities at the high level. Caroline also took a leading role in the initial development stages of the new 14-19 Diploma in Science, overseeing higher education engagement and also acted as a science advisor for the qualification development through the diploma development stages.

Pauline Maden
Higher Education Curriculum Manager

Pauline Maden joined Cogent in 2009 as the Higher Education Curriculum Manager. Pauline joins Cogent from her previous position as Business Development Manager, in the Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care at Manchester Metropolitan University, where she led on the development of enterprise and employer engagement strategy. Prior to this, Pauline worked at the Royal College of Surgeons of England where she managed educational initiatives to drive forward surgical training opportunities, which reflected and supported the evolving nature of workforce development.
Pauline will be working with employers and other stakeholders to develop and deliver employer-led curricula in partnership with Higher Education, in particular through the HEFCE funded Working Higher project to develop a suite of flexible, work-based Foundation Degrees in collaboration with a consortium of HEIs and employers.

Julie Plumbley
Research Advisor for Education and Qualifications
Julie
Plumbley joined Cogent as a Research Advisor
in May 2007. Julie joined Cogent from Liverpool City Council, where she worked
as a Workforce Development Coordinator. Whilst working for the Council, Julie
gained her Masters degree, and developed an expertise in social research. Since
joining Cogent Julie has developed an expertise in Education and Qualifications
LMI and has been involved in many projects across the organisation. Initially,
Julie worked closely with the Education and Qualifications team, and produced
the research element of the Sector Qualifications Strategy (SQS). Following on
from the SQS, Julie produced the Higher Education and Cogent Workforce
factsheet, which focuses on higher level skills and the flow of Higher Education
students into the Cogent workforce. Currently Julie is devoting a lot of her
time to the State of the Nation report, and is responsible for the pre and
post-16 education and training LMI and Student Perceptions, the Pharmaceutical
Review and the 14 – 19 STEM Review.
