05 Dec 2006 - Cogent SSC Supports Leitch Review’s £80 billion Skills Drive
Cogent Sector Skills Council (SSC) has wholeheartedly endorsed the recommendations outlined today in the Treasury-led Leitch Review of Skills and urges the Government to move forward quickly in implementing them, so that the UK makes much swifter progress on its journey to become a world-leader in skills. Lord Leitch has said realising these ambitions would result in a potential net benefit of at least £80billion over 30 years.
04 Dec 2006 - More Choice for Young People post-16
The Education Secretary, Alan Johnson, has announced that schools and colleges will offer more choices to young people over what they study post-16, by providing greater access to the International Baccalaureate (IB) and 14-19 Diplomas for those who want it. Increased access to the IB, in addition to A-levels and the new Diplomas, will give young people more high quality choice than ever before. Students will be able to choose different types of programmes to suit their personal needs. They will be able access the one that is right for them and which will provide a good basis for progression into higher education and employment.
31 Oct 2006 - Skills Academies Bids Successful
The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has given the green light to a Process Industries National Skills Academy (PINSA) and a Nuclear National Skills Academy (NNSA). The new Academies will go live at the end of 2007.
16 Oct 2006 - Longest Gas Pipeline Opened
Gas is being fed for the first time through a 746-mile long (1,200km) pipeline that will feed natural gas from Norway into UK's National grid.
