Skill Academies will have important role to play
Last October the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) gave Cogent the green light to develop a business plan for two employer-led Skills Academies – one for process industries (NSAPI) and one for nuclear (NSAN).  They will be based on a hub and spoke model, where a small centre will provide leadership and accreditation and a network of regional specialist training centres will deliver the industry training.

In April NSAN ran a workshop to examine the current initiatives to promote the STEM agenda in schools and what role the Academy should have in pulling this together. The Academy will support this work by promoting the nuclear industry in schools.

The meeting, which was also attended by the Manufacturing Institute, included presentations from representatives of the following organisations.

SETNET  which aims to ensure that more young people in the UK make a choice to enter science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related careers at all levels, and future generations are properly informed about the science and technology that surrounds them.

Science Learning Centres  a national network for professional development in science teaching. The Centres support teachers in enhancing their professional skills by learning more about contemporary scientific ideas and in experimenting with effective teaching approaches provide advanced training.

Energy Foresight which provides a set of education resources for Key Stage 4 that present radioactivity and related issues in personal and social contexts.

Signposter  an online system in which an individual can record, review and plan his/her past, current and future achievements as well as assess learning, career and lifestyle opportunities.

Cogent Diplomas Manager, Ian Moores, who attended the meeting said: “It is essential that we get future generations enthused and excited about STEM subjects in schools The involvement of the NSAN in supporting the STEM agenda will not only promote the industry but also add value to the way in which science and technology are taught in schools.”
