Cogent has developed a Qualifications
Strategy for its Sector which has been held up as an exemplar by the Sector
Skills Development Agency (SSDA),
and will be presented at a unique Vocational Reform Conference to be held on
the 22 January at the QEII Centre in Westminster.
The keynote speech will be made by David
Lammy MP, Minister for Skills, who will set out the Government’s vision on
reforming the vocational system – which he has stated is a “once in a
generation opportunity.”
Cogent representative and Director of
Education and Qualifications, James Murdock
will present on Cogent’s approach, together with Steve
Westhead, Managing Director of Solutia UK Ltd and Cogent
Board member, who will present the employer viewpoint on how this will work in
industry via the Cogent “Gold Standard”.
Cogent’s strategy is resulting in a set of
work-based qualifications that are fit for 21st Century
businesses in the Cogent science-using sector. It’s a key part of a much bigger
programme to reform the vocational qualifications system in the UK.
The
UKVQRP (UK Vocational Qualification Reform Programme) will revolutionise the
qualifications framework and the way they are delivered and funded.
The overall aim,
following extensive research through the Sector Skills Agreement, is to move
from full-sized qualifications to a framework of bite-sized, modular units that
support continuous professional development.
This will be flexible enough to draw in all kinds of learning (including
in-house training) and achievement gained at every level.
