Cogent has completed its comprehensive review of qualifications and learning provision across the six industries and the four nations of the UK. This has resulted in a Sector Qualifications Strategy (SQS), which has been submitted to the Sector Skills Development Agency for approval. The work follows on directly from the important conclusions reached in the Sector Skills Agreement (SSA) process.
Sector Qualifications Strategies are a key mechanism for the delivery of the Leitch vision of employer-driven skills supply. The SQS underpins Cogent’s work, through it we will attract and channel the funding for the qualifications we approve and it becomes the demand-led route to developing the workforce. The strategy is designed to support employers in closing skills gaps and coping with the new demands that go hand-in-hand with a global economy. Qualifications are a critical tool in meeting this challenge and an important vehicle for managing change.
The Cogent SQS will deliver a framework that recognises achievements at every level; that is employer-led; that is flexible; that adapts to change and that embraces diversity.
Dawn Hillier, Cogent Education and Qualifications Manager said: “Our SQS takes in every stage of a person’s progression in his or her career from pre-entry through to professional qualifications, with upskilling being central to our approach. This together with a modular, accredited route to progress and transferable and recorded skills, underpins of our action plan.”
Cogent consulted with employers and stakeholders to define a shared vision of qualifications and learning provision based on the detailed picture of skills needs established through the SSA.
