Careers
Few areas of work can match the challenges and variety of different careers within the Cogent sector.  Also the use of new technology and the need for the continuous development of technology is at the forefront of these industries and as an example the oil and gas industry is continually developing technology to achieve and exceed environmental performance.  It is also changing in the area of exploitation of old fields and new field discoveries, and with newer discoveries tending to be in deeper waters further offshore, new technologies and techniques need to be developed.

In the nuclear industry, with safety being of major importance, the industry is continually enhancing safety technology and designs of replacement reactors are being developed with increasing levels of safety.

The industries within the Cogent sector require a high quality of new recruits at all levels across a wide variety of disciplines. In particular highly specialised research and technical staff for a wide range of scientific and engineering roles, graduates with a range of scientific and technical degrees and technicians.   As well as this requirement for engineers and scientists, technicians and process operators there is also a need for staff to support the technical operation and manage the business support.

To support recognised qualifications employers will also require generic skills to reflect the changes in organisational structures working practice, technological change and a general increase in the expectation of employees.  The following generic skills looked for are communication, team-working and getting on with others, problem solving and taking responsibility and showing initiative.
