The Chemistry Leadership Council
The CLC was formed in early 2003 to fulfill the first recommendation of the Chemicals Innovation and Growth Team Report of December 2002.
The Chemicals Innovation and Growth Team (CIGT) was established by Lord Sainsbury, the Minister for Science in January 2002. Its terms of reference were:
• To evaluate the key factors that will impact on the chemicals industry globally and identify the opportunities and challenges for the UK over the next 15 - 20 years.
• To formulate a vision of what the future chemicals industry might look like and how to get there.
• To make recommendations to industry, Government and others for specific actions.
The CIGT was chaired by Byron Grote, at that time Group Managing Director BP and Chief Executive, Chemicals. The team drew on the experience of many people both from within and outside the chemicals industry.
The CIGT Report identified the need for leadership by the industry to address the challenges the industry faces earning a better reputation, responding to the challenges of sustainable development and improving productivity.
Barry Stickings, Chairman BASF plc and Deputy Chairman of the CIGT was appointed by Lord Sainsbury in December 2002 to lead the Chemistry Leadership Council.


The Skills Network Group
The SNG was formed in mid 2003 and is the largest of the groups with a membership representing a wide range of interests.
The SNG has been working with the chemical industry, the Sector Skills Councils, the Trade Unions, Universities and the Professional Bodies to increase the performance of chemical companies by improving and broadening the skills base of their employees.
The programme is to understand the current skills gaps, to define future skills needs and to formulate action plans to be taken by all parties. Also, to develop the industry case for skills investment, to work with the Sector Skills Councils to develop a plan to encourage diversity and to extend the remit of the Process Industry Centre for Manufacturing Excellence (PICME) so it focusses more on training and skills for business improvement.
To plan is to present a report to the CLC that addresses the recommendations of the Chemicals Innovation and Growth Team Report with an action plan by June 2004.
This plan will include the views of all interested bodies and must achieve buy-in from key stakeholders.

The CITO Network
The Chemical Industry Training Organisations Network.  The CITO network operates through local forums across England and in Scotland.

NEPIC
NEPIC is an organisation set up by industrialists to represent the 150 Pharmaceutical, Speciality Chemical and Biolotechnology companies across the North East Region. The cluster addresses issues that can be best dealt with collaboratively by companies.

For examples, the provision of skills and training, and the attraction of the best young people into the industry. It enables networking and supply chain connections for its members and also provides a knowledge brokerage service. The cluster is a conduit to national and regional government information and assistance.  It represents members’ interests to these and other stakeholders.
