The National Skills Academy for Nuclear has welcomed the announcement by Secretary of State for the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, John Denham, to relicense its parent organisation Cogent Sector Skills Council.
Cogent is working to ensure the skills supply into the high-value chemicals, pharmaceuticals, nuclear, oil and gas, petroleum and polymer industries. It is one of four “first tranche” SSCs to have been successful in their application for a further trademark licence to operate as SSCs and has gone through a comprehensive assessment process lead by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills.
Together Cogent and the National Skills Academy for Nuclear, alongside nuclear employers, are driving a strategic nuclear skills programme. It’s a plan that takes on board the totality of the education pyramid: from schools through to apprenticeships and further education colleges, to graduate and post-graduate programmes.
Jean Llewellyn, Chief Executive of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear, said;
“I am delighted to hear this announcement from The Secretary of State that Cogent is one of the first Sector Skills Councils to be relicenced.
We look forward to continuing our close and effective working partnership with Cogent Sector Skills Council, who have worked with the Skills Academy on the development of many of its products. Cogent's collaboration with the National Skills Academy for Nuclear is ensuring that programmes of learning are increasingly underpinned by national frameworks, standards and qualifications. This is equipping both the present workforce and will equip the generations to follow, with the world-class skills needed to sustain a leading-edge Nuclear Industry.
“This strategic skills alliance, is aimed at securing the highly skilled employees the nuclear sector needs to contribute to an industry with a very bright future.”
