Process Industries National Skills Academy: latest news from DfES

Cogent submitted an Expression of Interest for a Process Industries National Skills Academy, (PINSA) in June this year. The latest news from the DfES is that PINSA has been short-listed for a panel review to take place this September.

Employer commitment to PINSA has been fundamental to its short-listing and  will be to its future success. So far, Cogent has received many letters of support offering in-kind contributions to the Board and to training provision,  as well as commitments for companies to direct significant elements of  their training budgets through PINSA.

Funding model encourages  broad employer commitment

The funding model developed to pump prime PINSA is based on numerous employer contributions with the DfES providing matching funding over three years.

This broad-based funding model is one of PINSA’s strengths because it is not dependent on a few major contributors, and, it reflects wider employer commitment to the Academy vision. At this stage, cash contributions  can be conditional on the Academy delivering real added value to  industry, but they will need to be confirmed at the business planning stage.

DfES funding for business plan development

If PINSA is successful at the panel review then DfES  will fund the development of a business plan over 12 months, which must include confirmation of real funding support.  The next steps would be approval from the Learning and Skills Council, (LSC), and then Ministerial  approval  with a launch timed for late in 2007.

Act now to help your Academy’s bid succeed.

If Cogent can show that we have 20 employers committed to funding PINSA, we will be demonstrating to the DfES panel  that employers want an Academy and that they are prepared to support one. With strong employer support, the PINSA project team have cleared some major hurdles to get the expression of interest short-listed. Employers can now help us give their  industry’s  submission the best chance of success by pledging £20k.
