Cogent, the national skills council for the nuclear industry has welcomed the decision which opens the way for investment in new nuclear power stations.
Cogent
CEO, Joanna Woolf said: “The Government
has signaled its confidence in the strategic importance of nuclear and the
industry’s role in the country’s future energy mix.
“Nuclear
provides a large-scale power supply and supports the climate change agenda. It
also helps to close the UK’s
impending energy gap and means that we are less reliant on imported fuels.”
She
added, “having the right skills in place is central to the current and future
success of this industry. Over the next 10 years, around 10,000 people in, or
joining, the nuclear industry will need in-depth training in relation to
decommissioning and waste management.
“By
the end of that 10 year period, the industry will need a growing number of
nuclear power operations staff to start up and run the next generation of power
stations which could be developed to replace the Magnox units.
“Cogent
is helping the industry in this process through the development of
national
frameworks for vocational and academic qualifications as well as National
Occupational Standards, NVQs, Apprenticeships and Degrees.
“The National Skills Academy Nuclear, a
subsidiary of Cogent, is ideally positioned to make best use of the existing
excellence in education provision and infrastructure as well as working with
employers to shape the training of the future.”
