Searching for the Nuclear Stars of the Next Generation
14 Jul 2009

The National Skills Academy for Nuclear has launched a search to find the Nuclear Sector’s Foundation Degree/HND student and Apprentice of the Year 2009. These Awards seek to acknowledge and celebrate learners’ exceptional contributions to their workplace. We are looking for apprentices and foundation degree students who have completed their apprenticeship framework or degree and have made a real difference to the organisation they work in. We are looking for individuals who have gone beyond everyone’s expectations, or have demonstrated huge improvement throughout their studies.

There will be 5 Regional Apprentice Awards covering the following areas, Northwest/Northeast, Southeast/East, Southwest, Scotland and Wales.  The UK Nuclear Apprentice of the Year will come from the Regional winners.  The Foundation Degree/HND student of the Year will have one National winner.

From each region, 3 finalists will be selected to be invited to attend the high profile UK Nuclear Skills Awards Dinner which will be held on the 11th February 2010 in Manchester.  The Skills Award Dinner is a collaborative event organised by Cogent Sector Skills Council and the National Skills Academy for Nuclear, which will feature both the Regional and National award presentations.

To ensure the highest calibre of nominations, only Skills Academy Associate Members are invited to nominate their ‘Apprentice or Foundation Degree student of the Year.’  If you are not a member of the Skills Academy and you would like to nominate a learner for this title, please get in touch with us for further information on becoming part of our Network.

Award application forms are available for download from the National Skills Academy for Nuclear’s website www.nuclear.nsacademy.co.uk  All forms are to be received by the Skills Academy no later than 5pm on the 23rd October 2009.

Jean Llewellyn, Chief Executive of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear;

“Apprenticeships have been highlighted as one of the key avenues for building and replenishing skills for the Nuclear sector.  This competition is being organised to showcase and reward some of the high quality work which is being completed by both Apprentices and our provider network.”

Katie Maxwell, UK Nuclear Apprentice of the Year 2008 works for NNL,

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard I had won the National Award. I knew there was strong competition.  I thoroughly enjoy the work I’m conducting and it’s a great time to be involved in research work at the NNL.”

Katie Maxwell joined the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) in September 2006 as a GEN II apprentice.  She became a permanent employee in January 2008. In her initial role with the NNL, Katie worked with the Vitrification Test Rig team.  She carried out aqueous sampling, acidity and density testing and work on particle distribution.

The judging panel commented that Katie, 19, demonstrated the drive and enthusiasm to be an inspiration to both existing and new Apprentices, and demonstrated that she is a truly exceptional individual, and a deserving winner of the very first UK Nuclear Apprentice of the Year Award.
