Cogent reveals good news on apprenticeships despite tough economic times
16 Feb 2009
Cogent Sector Skills Council has completed a major research project in the North East in collaboration with the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC) and its partner the National Skills Academy Process Industries.
One of the key findings has indicated employer plans to recruit 302 apprentices during 2009 reflecting the fact that major chemicals and pharmaceuticals companies are continuing to invest in the talent of the future, despite facing extremely tough trading conditions. The research was undertaken by market researchers, Opening Doors, during November 2008 with 32% of the 409 companies approached completing the interview by phone, resulting in 131 completed interviews.
Mervin Dadd, Cogent Director commented: “Even during these difficult economic times it is heartening to see process industry employer respondents committing to apprenticeship programmes. This means that young people attain nationally recognised qualifications and employers get the skills they need to succeed and innovate.
Cogent’s Apprenticeship Frameworks for the Sector provide work-based training to young people and adults. Importantly, they have been designed by employers to ensure they are industry-relevant.
