Modern Apprenticeships Awards launch
23 Sep 2009

The search for Scotland’s top apprentices, learning providers, colleges and employers is on with the launch of the Skills Development Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeships Awards. Now in their eighth year, the Awards are a celebration of the high standards being reached by many employees, employers and learning providers involved in Modern Apprenticeships.

The 2009 Modern Apprenticeships Awards will showcase those people or organisations that have shown initiative, enterprise and outstanding commitment to developing skills and the Scottish economy.

This year the Modern Apprenticeships Awards have been sponsored by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and there are nine categories which include Apprentice of the Year in traditional and non-traditional sectors for those aged 16 to 19 and those over 20. There are also categories for small, medium and large employers as well as those who work in partnership to deliver Modern Apprenticeships.

Skills Development Scotland’s chief executive Damien Yeates said: “These Awards are all about recognising the achievements of outstanding people who have developed first class skills and the companies and organisations who are supporting them as they build their future. We hope that this year will see a record number of entries from a wide range of industries.

SQA chief executive Janet Brown said: "SQA are delighted to be the sponsor for the 2009 Modern Apprenticeships Awards. Modern Apprenticeships are an invaluable way to get young people trained in skills that are vital for our economy and for our society. I encourage employers, learners and training providers to participate in the nomination process for these unique awards."

Chair of the judging panel Jacqui Hepburn said: “The Modern Apprenticeship programme supplies the foundations needed to provide a highly skilled workforce, not only in traditional sectors like Construction and Engineering, but also in non-traditional sectors like Renewables and Life Sciences. I feel very privileged to chair the Modern Apprenticeship Awards this year, as they celebrate some of Scotland’s best talent, recognise the hard work of these individuals, and support them in building their future careers. ”

Entry information is available online at www.skillsdevelopmentscotland.co.uk and completed applications must be received by noon on 2 October 2009. Finalists will be VIP guests at an awards ceremony and dinner at the Radisson SAS Hotel in Glasgow on 9 December 2009.
