In May 2007, following open tender, Bridgwater College was selected as the South West hub of the National Skills Academy Nuclear. The role of the hub is to deliver training and encourage the development and delivery of quality training by other Academy assured providers in the Southwest Regional Training Cluster.
The
first two cohorts of employees from three Magnox South reactor sites (Hinkley
Point, Bradwell and Dungeness) have completed their NVQ Level 2 Nuclear
Decommissioning programmes at Bridgwater
College and will soon
receive their City & Guilds certificates. The next suite of nuclear training programmes to be
delivered at Bridgwater
College will commence at
the end of February 2008. In addition to the NVQ 2 in Nuclear Decommissioning
the College will be running the new NVQ Level 2 in Radiation Protection
alongside the Radiation Safety Practice Stage One (Theory) programme. The programme will be delivered on a “short,
sharp” basis with six full weeks of training over a four or five month period.
Bridgwater College can also offer the NVQs at Level 3 and will
be commencing a Foundation Degree in Nuclear Decommissioning (subject to
validation by the University
of Central Lancashire)
from September 2008. These nationally recognised qualifications will play a vital role
in re-skilling the existing nuclear workforce and training the next generation
within the nuclear industry.
Bridgwater College in Somerset has delivered training to the nuclear industry at nearby Hinkley Point for over forty years. The College is one of the most successful FE colleges in the country, designated Outstanding by Ofsted and a Learning & Skills Beacon College by the Government.
