Three young engineering students from Grantham College have been offered full time apprenticeships with two leading polymer companies in Rutland.
Shaun Clarke, Lucas Pollock and James Young attended an Open Day at the college last year and were successful in being offered sponsorships by Linecross who are based in South Luffenham and RPC Containers Oakham. The promotion was facilitated by Cogent, the national skills council for the polymer industry.
In
the past year the students have supplemented their studies by attending
induction and work placements with the employers. Linecross and RPC have been
so impressed with them that they’ve now been offered the students apprenticeships
which will commence in the summer. Shaun
and Lucas will be joining RPC Containers and James will be recruited by
Linecross.
The plastic companies are
part of an alliance designed to offer new apprenticeship opportunities to the
region’s young people.
Cogent Skills Director for
the region Bill Erskine said: “Grantham
College provides
specialist industry qualification-based training, while the employers provide
work-based experience and mentoring. It’s an ideal and exciting combination of
theory and practice which gives the apprentices an excellent start to a highly
rewarding career.”
The two companies are at the
forefront of the polymers industry and have made significant investments in the
latest plastics processing technology. They are offering excellent careers, as
well as further education opportunities, potentially right up to degree level.
Stuart
Fry, Managing Director of Linecross said: “Linecross believe that
Apprenticeships provide a key part of our future success.”
Gillian Doughty, Human
Resources Manager at RPC comments: “RPC has a history of investing in
Apprenticeships and we see this programme as a great opportunity to progress
our polymer programme.”
Polymer
companies in the region are once again offering sponsorship places in 2008 and
another Open Day is scheduled at Grantham
College on Friday May
15th. Young people who may interested in attending the Open Day should contact
Bob McKinlay at the College on 01476 402213
