Cogent Sector Skills Council will be on Stand 312 at The Manufacturer LIVE exhibition, taking place at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, Warwickshire. Cogent will be joined by Proskills UK, the Sector Skills Council for the building products, coatings, extractives, glass and paper manufacturing Industries.
Cogent Director of External Affairs, Mervin
Dadd said: “One of the key pillars of manufacturing is skills
and productivity. Cogent’s role is to make sure that both current employees and
people coming into our manufacturing industries have the right skills to ensure
a successful future for this hi-tech, science-using sector. “We will be demonstrating our flagship programmes at the
exhibition and showing employers how they can get involved with us to boost
skills and improve recruitment.” In addition, during the plenary session on 18th
October, Managing Director of leading
chemical company Solutia inc, Steve Westhead,
will be giving a talk about Cogent’s Sector Qualification Strategy, and in
particular our Gold Standard (see
below) and how it is helping his company boost skills.
Research
Cogent’s research shows its economically important science-using
manufacuturing sector needs thousands of suitably qualified science graduates
and multi-skilled technicians if it is to succeed and compete in the global economy.
The industries face pressing skills shortages, and
compounding the situation, an ageing workforce means that many of those who
have years of experience and the right skills are retiring, taking all their
knowledge and expertise with them.
During the event Cogent will be asking delegates to
participate in its ongoing “Oracle” research programme, and benefit from being
part of an evidence gathering project that finds out how skills are progressing
and spots future industry trends.
Cogent will be showcasing its solutions to the sector’s
skills challenges at The Manufacturing Live exhibition including: Cogent
Careers Pathways
The Cogent manufacturing sector needs to attract the very
best talent - and inspire young people to take up careers in its dynamic and
rewarding industries. In response to this Cogent has developed Cogent Career Pathways a one-stop-shop
web-based careers information, advice and guidance centre which contains
information on career progression, jobs and training right across the sector.
It is a richly-packed resource which is already proving invaluable to all those
involved in giving careers advice and guidance to young people - and young
people themselves. In addition it shows
mature learners how they can move around and progress their careers in the
sector.
Cogent
Competence Assurance
Cogent’s research showed that its highly-regulated
industries are managing their organisational competence with varying degrees of
success. In response it developed a
unique universal Self-Assessment Competence Assurance health-check designed so
that companies can assess their management of risk, benchmark competence
standards against their peers and promote best practice internally.
www.cogent-competence.com contains an initial web-based assessment -
and Cogent can also follow up to offer advice on assessment against the
standard with accreditation/certification.
The
Cogent Gold Standard
Fundamental to Upskilling the workforce in the Cogent
manufacturing sector is the Cogent “Gold Standard”. This is an aspirational
world class job standard to raise the bar upwards from minimum industry job standards
and help companies to compete globally. It covers 6 categories of skills:
- Technical and Competence
- Productivity and
Innovation
- Functional
Skills
- Health and
Safety
- Environment
- Quality
Cogent is identifying the key skills and competence
requirements for the core roles in its sector based on these key categories. It means that employers will be able more
effectively define their skill needs and makes it clear what kind of training
provision they require.
WIN A MAGNUM OF CHAMPAGNE
Delegates who take the time to fill out a short Cogent
questionnaire will be entered into a draw to win a Magnum of champagne (x2).
