Cogent SSC presented its key message about the critical role of workforce development in boosting productivity at PDM 2005.
Cogent showcased its messages with a stand at Plastic Design and Moulding Exhibition (PDM), which was held at the Telford International Centre from 12-14 April. Final attendance figures for the EMAP Maclaren show, the first of its kind, were over 2700. The visitors, who make purchasing decisions on machinery, ancillary equipment, moulds, material and subcontracting, came from the many sectors of industry which use polymers and related products.
Cogent made the most of the exhibition by gathering information on all aspects of innovation, design and technology and its impact on company productivity, via a questionnaire. The aim was to find out if the sector is enhancing its skills in these critical areas in order to remain competitive and sustainable.
Brian Manning, Cogent’s Polymer Skills Development Adviser, who attended the show, said: “The sector requires innovators, technologists and designers in order to remain at the forefront and we need to understand more about how companies are progressing on this front.
“The range of developments on show at PDM was extremely impressive. This is a vibrant industry which is developing new and exciting applications all the time. But there is still a great deal to achieve, particularly in the small to medium-sized business sector. Cogent is working within the key networks to drive skills right across the industry.
“For Cogent this was an important opportunity to see the latest product developments close up and in action. It also provided excellent networking with colleagues and peers and those who were keen to know more about what Cogent is doing.
“Much interest was expressed regarding the Polymer Leadership Council’s proposed new sub-group, focusing on Innovation, Design and Technology (IDT). Many leading names from the world of innovation and design have committed to signing up to forming the group and it is planned to hold the inaugural meeting at the beginning of June 2005, where the terms of reference for its operation and area of coverage will be agreed.”
Cogent will choose, at random, one completed survey and the respondent will receive a complimentary Ferrari Experience. The winner will learn circuit techniques and then complete a number of laps, finishing with a high-speed passenger ride with a professional driver.
