Big wage increases for civil engineers
A survey of more than 2,500 civil engineers found that average salaries for those under 25 had risen by more than 28 per cent in the past six years to £21,599. The Institution of Civil Engineers, which conducted the survey, said that a big wage increase, particularly for those just entering the industry, was "due to fewer graduates joining the profession after university". Although the number of students studying civil engineering had picked up in recent years, it was still lower than in the mid-1990s, said the ICE.
As a result, starting salaries had increased dramatically. By contrast, increases in the average annual pay of managing directors and senior partners had only matched inflation, rising 13 per cent to £67,000 since 1999.
