Tomlinson tells employers to get involved in vocational education
31 May 2005

Step up and get involved says Tomlinson

Employers  should be more involved in vocational training — and should benefit from tax breaks for doing so, according to a former government adviser on qualification reform.

Sir Mike Tomlinson says that businesses should support the vocational diplomas that will be launched by 2008.

In the past, businesses have criticised vocational training for failing to equip young people with the sort of skills that are needed, reports The Times Educational Supplement (May 27).

“This is the opportunity for employers to get involved. They have asked for this chance. My challenge to them is: step up, get involved or forever shut up,” says Sir Mike.

But he also suggests that the Government should make it easier for businesses to get involved. “It will not happen unless we give some form of financial support,” he says, suggesting this could take the form of either a financial incentive or a tax incentive.

In its response to the Tomlinson report — set out in February in a White Paper — the Government said it wanted to see greater collaboration between schools, colleges and workplaces. But there was no mention of additional cash being made available.

Sir Mike also told conference delegates that the Government had not devoted more attention to the issue of qualifications for young people who failed to gain at least five good GCSEs.

Neil Bentley, the head of skills at the Confederation of British Industry, said: “Employers want to get involved, and are already involved in offering work experience.”
