Letter to the FT from Dr Michael Cross.
Sir, The Financial Times has done those of us involved in science education and its application a great service in covering the developments in chemistry teaching and research at Sussex University, and the broader role of science in our society and economy as an engine for growth and broader development ("Scientists rally to save chemistry department", March 14). If we are to develop a relatively high-growth economy based increasingly on intellectual property, it is vital that we support and develop all our centres of excellence both at national and regional levels.
To this end, we need truly consistent and integrated policies operating across the UK, and across government departments, for the development of science education and research capacity and capability.
We already have some structures within education, within skills development and within the industrial sphere, and these need to be allowed to develop further and hopefully prevent the closure of Grade 5 departments of chemistry such as the one at Sussex.
