Cogent welcomes the Energy Review.
Cogent said it welcomed the Government’s Energy Review: however the document made no mention of skills and the actions arising from the review will very much depend on availability of highly skilled people - now and in the longer term. Without positive action to reverse the trend of decline in science and engineering, Cogent is concerned that the pipeline of people who are willing and able to take responsibility for the technical roles in providing the energy which the economy demands, will simply dry up. It urged the government to make a policy statement on the need for technology to achieve the transformation of society’s energy use and for it to increase funding to schools, colleges and universities for SET activity. Cogent also wants to see a requirement on schools, Higher Education (HE) and Further Education (FE) institutions to include energy generation and use within the SET curriculum as a subject and use this as part of the SET curriculum at A-Level/ Highers.
