Health and Safety is a key element of both industry and occupational standards. The oil and gas extraction industry operates in dangerous environments and handle hazardous products. It is therefore essential to ensure that workers within this industry are highly trained in dealing with health and safety issues, not only for their own protection, but most importantly for that of the general public. Health and Safety legislation also imposes very strict standards of safety training. Because safety is a primary requirement of the oil and gas extraction industry, the sector has developed self-regulatory schemes, in certain cases approved by the Health and Safety Executive, to ensure that industry workers, including and in particular contractors, meet the minimum standards required.
Vantage - Offshore Passport & Personnel Tracking System - is one of them. It has been developed by OPITO as an aid to improving safety across the offshore oil and gas industry. The Vantage system tracks offshore trip durations and workers' competency and training. It addresses key concerns identified within a "Step Change for Safety" initiative in 1998 and is endorsed by the main organisations, trade associations, trade unions and governing bodies.
OPITO is also offering a wide range of OPITO Emergency Response Standards, designed to ensure all personnel on board an offshore facility and the stand by rescue vessel, have the necessary skills and knowledge required in times of an emergency.
