| 11 Jun 2008 - SPIRIT PhD Studentships |
| The Scottish Funding Council has approved the award of 30 PhD studentships to Scottish universities participating in the ScotCHEM research pooling initiative. These SPIRIT studentships are specifically to work on projects for chemical companies operating in Scotland. This is a “first” for Scotland and the chemical sector will be the only participant in this first (pilot) year; other sectors may be added in future depending on the success achieved. Awards will be for 3.5 years and the students involved will submit their work for a PhD.

| 29 May 2008 - World Skills - Proposed environmental science competition |
| A cross–sectoral initiative by Cogent, Lantra and Semta in partnership with UK Skills, the British Geological Survey, unionlearn and Prospect trade union. The union is to develop an environmental science competition. Our aim is to showcase this competition first at EuroSkills 2010 and subsequently at WorldSkills 2011, which will be held in London. |

| The National Skills Academy for Nuclear has approved its first training provider since its launch at the end of January 2008. TTE Training Limited (Training Tomorrow’s Engineers) is the North West’s leading provider of Engineering and Laboratory Operations Advanced Apprenticeships, operating from a purpose-built £2.2 million training centre in Ellesmere Port. |

| Customers in the Polymer Industry may be aware of current developments with SASL the awarding body.
SASL and parent body Cogent have been seeking to expand the range of products and to enhance the service we are able to provide to polymer businesses.
We are therefore pleased to confirm that we are in advanced negotiations to sell SASL’s awarding rights to the process industry awarding body PAA\VQ-SET.

| Regional development agency One NorthEast has awarded more than £1.65m of funding to the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC), ensuring its growth over the next three years. The funding has come through the Agency’s Single Programme. |
