07 May 2009 - UK workers 'becoming overskilled'
There are now too few jobs for UK graduates, and the gap between the supply of high-level workers and jobs for them is growing, a report suggests. The report by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills says businesses need to show more vision and be more ambitious to offer highly skilled jobs. It says targets for the year 2020 to raise the skills of those with low or intermediate skills will not be met.

The Royal Academy of Engineering supports the training and development of engineers in UK Industry through its annual scheme which makes company awards of up to £15,000 each.
16 Apr 2009 - Cogent responds to unveiling of nuclear reactor site options
The Government is pressing ahead with its plans to replace the nuclear energy that will be lost from the close down of older nuclear plants, through the release of a list of 11 sites in England and Wales where new nuclear power stations could be built.
01 Apr 2009 - New Commissioners announced for UK Commission for Employment and Skills
Skills Secretary John Denham today announced the appointment of two new Commissioners for the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. Nigel Whitehead, Group Managing Director at BAE Systems programmes and support and James Wates, Deputy Chairman of the construction and development group Wates, joined the Commission on 16 March and 1 April respectively.
01 Apr 2009 - Energy Institute wins education and training award
The Energy Institute (EI) has won this year’s Special Association Award for advancing education in the oil and gas industry, receiving well over 1000 votes from individuals working in energy. Presented at the annual education and training Getenergy event in London, this award recognises the education work of the EI, most notably the development of its careers and education website, www.energyzone.net and supporting services to its Student and Graduate members to get their careers off to a flying start.

24 Mar 2009 - Redeployment Help for SE Pharma Staff
Pharmaceutical staff in the South East of England can now access a specialist web-based skills service offering advice on redeployment and re-training and funding support. The Technical Skills Project has already been helping marine and aerospace companies with access and signposting to publicly funded skills and training initiatives. The SEEDA funded project has worked alongside the South East Health Technologies Alliance- with 800 member companies in the SE- and will be focusing on support for Pfizer Global Manufacturing and their existing arrangements for the proactive redeployment of staff who may be “at risk” of redundancy.
