| ONE of the UK’s most senior industrialists, from the world’s third largest chemical company, has urged North East employers to take control of the skills crisis affecting the £67bn process industries.
Tom Crotty, Chief Executive of INEOS Olefins and Polymers, part of the global $48bn chemicals company INEOS, outlined the steps businesses need to take to tackle the problems of a workforce in which 40% of people are aged 45 and over.
Speaking at a recent national skills summit organised by the National Skills Academy Process Industries, he spoke about the issues resulting from a lack of young people coming into the industry to replace those approaching retirement, plus other key skills shortages in the staff and contractor base. |

| 11 May 2009 - Cogent relicensed by Government |
| Cogent Sector Skills Council has today been relicensed by Skills Secretary John Denham. Cogent is working to ensure the skills supply into the high-value chemicals, pharmaceuticals, nuclear, oil and gas, petroleum and polymer industries. It is one of four “first tranche” SSCs to have been successful in their application for a further trademark licence to operate as SSCs and has gone through a comprehensive assessment process lead by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. |

| 11 May 2009 - Centrica in British Energy deal |
| British Gas owner Centrica has said it is buying a 20% stake in nuclear firm British Energy for £2.3bn.
Centrica had first agreed a £3.1bn deal with British Energy's French owner EDF last summer, and this would have seen it take a 25% stake.
However, talks on the deal had dragged on after electricity prices fell.
EDF's £12.5bn takeover of British Energy, which runs eight UK nuclear power plants, was concluded in January of this year.
Centrica and EDF plan to build four new nuclear plants on existing sites as part of the the UK government's plans for the country to get more of its electricity from nuclear generation. |
