Cogent SSC has been working with employers on a number of topics addressing the up-skilling of the existing technical workforce. As part of this,
Working Higher, a national Foundation Degree Framework for the science based industries is now in development, and will begin to deliver flexible training pathways from September 2010.
Using this experience and industry exchange there is a route to broadening the remit of the
Working Higher project to address new models of entry into the STEM based industries through new pathways for younger entrants, such as through Higher Level Apprenticeships, and Foundation Degrees. By engaging with industry and other stakeholders, there is an opportunity to discuss a number of the issues surrounding attraction, delivery and sustainability of frameworks that are professionally recognised. In particular, this project would tackle the key areas of:
• Models for delivery and funding of technician training
• Attraction into these career roles
• Market analysis for employer/ee uptake and recruitment
• Professional recognition and progression
This project will begin to address a seed change in perception in terms of professional careers in the sector, increase awareness with employers and providers, and bring together stakeholders to support Technicians.
Solutions need to be supported
In order for this concept to succeed, targets and measures need to be determined, and will include:
• Professional value placed on the work of technicians in association with the Technicians Council
• Employers recognising need and supporting
• HE and FE providers working towards this vocational pathway
• Attraction and value on career progression in this area
