IMechE, National Skills Academy and Cogent SSC sign MOU
07 Jun 2011

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Cogent Sector Skills Council and the National Skills Academy Process Industries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

In signing the MoU, the Skills Academy, Cogent and the Institution recognise that they have a common interest in promoting mechanical engineering careers in the science based industries, and in establishing and maintaining standards of training, education and qualifications.

Equally, all three parties are committing to promote skills development and workforce development specifically in the chemicals, pharmaceuticals and polymers industries.

A key opportunity of the partnership is the alignment of the Institution’s professional standing with Cogent’s Gold Standard competency framework for world class performance.

The Skills Academy will ensure that education, training and qualifications are readily available to meet the Gold Standards and the requirements of the Institution’s professional registration process.

Cogent and the Skills Academy will ensure that existing and new apprenticeship frameworks provide a route to EngTech registration and are supported and promoted to the existing and future cohorts of apprentices in the relevant disciplines.

The MoU was signed by Stephen Tetlow, the CEO of the Institution; Joanna Woolf, Chief Executive of Cogent; and John Holton, Cogent Strategy Director.

Joanna Woolf said: “The MOU with the Institution is a really positive step that demonstrates the confidence that the Institution has in the work of Cogent and the Skills Academy. We are developing Cogent’s Gold Standards in engineering and manufacturing for key roles across the process industries that show employers what good looks like against industry-agreed competency frameworks. We can complement what the Institution does because of our shared commitment to excellence in engineering and continuing professional development.”

Stephen Tetlow said: “The Institution already has MoUs in place with SEMTA and the National Skills Academy for Rail Engineers, and similar agreements with the REME, Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. These are bearing fruit in the way they set skills and are mapped in to Engineering Council requirements and the specifics of the industry. Without doubt, these partnerships are helping to raise standards of engineering, safety and excellence.".
