OBE for the Chief Executive of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear
14 Jun 2011

Jean Llewellyn, Chief Executive of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear, has been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Jean has been appointed to the Order of the British Empire for her services to the Energy Industry.

Jean is a prominent figure on the nuclear skills agenda and is well respected and held in high esteem throughout the sector and government, so much so, that last year she became only the second person to be awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Nuclear Institute, and was the first female recipient.

Jean’s connection to the nuclear industry began in 2003, when she was Head of Skills Policy for the Northwest Development Agency. Whilst in this position, Jean was chair of the Nuclear Employers Steering Group for 2 years, a period which saw Jean’s first successful nuclear skills project, a bid to create the ENERGUS training facility in West Cumbria. This training facility has since become the Northwest flagship delivery centre for the Skills Academy.

Jean Llewellyn was appointed as Chief Executive of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear, on the Skills Academy’s formation in November 2007. She came to the role having led the Project Team which developed the Skills Academy’s Business Plan on a year’s secondment from the Northwest Development Agency (NWDA).

Jean Llewellyn has become a highly recognisable figure across the sector for her enthusiastic leadership of the employer-led National Skills Academy for Nuclear.  Since the Skills Academy’s inception in 2007, Jean has been a key driving force in building and sustaining the organisation as an effective and viable force for ensuring the sector has the skills necessary for maintaining a safe world-class nuclear industry in the UK.

The Skills Academy provides a platform that enables the different sub sectors of nuclear to come together to explore the skills needs and agree dynamic and innovative skills solutions, aiding in the development of the capacity and capability of the UK Nuclear workforce to support the achievement of the industry’s 2020 vision.

Under Jean’s leadership, in just over three years, the Skills Academy has developed and implemented a number of innovative skills solutions some of which include;

  • The implementation of nuclear industry agreed standards via the newly launched Nuclear Skills Passport system.
  • The development of Quality Assurance processes for providers and training programmes offering employers complete confidence in the quality of training delivered.
  • The development of a number of products and services specifically designed for the needs of nuclear such as the Award for Nuclear Industry Awareness, the Triple Bar and Certificate of Nuclear Professionalism which will be launched next year.

 Jean Llewellyn, Chief Executive of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear;
I am absolutely thrilled to be honoured with an OBE; it is the highlight of my professional career.  It is a great recognition of the success and impact of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear which couldn’t have been achieved without all the hard work and dedication of my team, and the leadership and support of the employer Board and Regional Chairs.”

The Rt Hon the Lord Jenkin of Roding, honorary President of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear commented;
 “I congratulate Jean on being awarded an OBE.  Jean's enthusiasm, energy and total commitment to ensuring we have a skilled, competent and safe nuclear workforce provides a confidence that the industry will once again be seen as an industry of choice, opportunity and career progression.  This is a really well deserved accolade for her and reflects the excellent work that Jean and her team has achieved, and will achieve in the future."

Joanna Woolf, Chief Executive of Cogent Sector Skills Council said;
“I am really delighted for Jean that her contribution to the nuclear skills agenda has been recognised in the award of an OBE in the Birthday Honours List.   Over the past few years we have seen Jean’s tireless commitment to developing a supportive  skills infrastructure through the National Skills Academy for Nuclear, working closely with Cogent on skills forecasting and qualifications and standards development.
