Announcing a new round of the Nuclear Bursary Scheme
26 Oct 2010

The National Skills Academy for Nuclear in partnership with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), URENCO and the National Nuclear Laboratory are rolling out a fifth round of their Nuclear Bursary Award Scheme.

The scheme is aimed at quality individuals on programmes of study relevant to the nuclear industry, with a particular focus on the decommissioning and nuclear fuel processing sub sectors of the nuclear industry.  The Bursary is open to variety of course levels and includes Foundation Degrees, Honours Degrees, Masters Degrees and Post graduate CPD qualifications.  The scheme offers financial assistance up to £2k on people on courses looking to have a career with the nuclear sector. The programme aims to attract a broader mix of new entrants into the nuclear industry and into the wider Science and Technology agenda, leading to increased diversity and opportunity in the sector.

In the previous four rounds, 115 students across the UK successfully secured bursary funding for their courses.

One of the successful candidates was Paul Hughes who received a Bursary in support of his MSc in Systems Practice with the Open University

“The bursary provided by the National Skills Academy Nuclear has enabled me to embark upon a course of study which would not be possible otherwise. Study fees can be very costly and my course is no exception. The financial burden of further study was not very appealing when other demands on my wage were counted- cars, insurance, mortgage etc. The first-class support provided by the Skills Academy has allowed me to draw up a manageable budget and having this backed by such a well recognised organisation gives me a greater confidence in my ambitions.

Historically, the nuclear industry has had a mixed publicity, however with support schemes such this being available across the entire sector, it's easy to find the opportunities available.”

The value of the award is determined by the strength and relevance of the applicant in fulfilling the aims of the programme.  The awards given are in the region of £500 - £2,000, and are dependant on effectively fulfilling the application criteria.

Applications will be accepted from individuals, or on behalf of individuals from employers and/or Higher Education Institutions. The application form and scoring criteria is available for download from the National Skills Academy for Nuclear’s website www.nuclear.nsacademy.co.uk/bursary-awards.

All forms are to be received by the Skills Academy no later than 5pm on the 17th December 2010. Applications are welcome from both new students’ and students’ part way through their course.

Jean Llewellyn Chief Executive of the National Skills Academy Nuclear said: “I am very pleased to be able to offer a fifth round of this bursary award Scheme.  The applications received in all of the previous rounds have been of very high quality, and highlighted the need for further roll out of this much needed bursary scheme.  It is very pleasing to see that the NDA are continuing to support this scheme, and it is very encouraging to see that two of our member organisations URENCO and NNL are also supporting the sector to attract quality candidates.”

Nigel Couzens, NDA’s Head of People Strategy, said: “We remain committed to encouraging the development of skills and training within the nuclear sector. I have been extremely impressed with the quality of previous applications and the results which are now leading to very capable and well qualified individuals. I am delighted to continue our contribution to this scheme”

Steve Ball, Head of Human Resources and Organisational Development, URENCO UK Ltd;  "The nuclear industry in the UK is facing many challenges and the availability of qualified people is vital for its future. URENCO is committed to investing in the skills, training and development of the right people for the industry and are delighted to support the National Skills Academy for Nuclear’s bursary award scheme.”
