| 17 Aug 2010 - The CIA and the National Skills Academy Process Industries create a specialist network for Process Safety Management |

| The Chemical Industries Association (CIA) announced a new partnership with the National Skills Academy Process Industries (the Academy) to address the issue of Process Safety Management. Following incidents at Buncefield, Texas City and the ongoing investigation of the fatal explosion and oil spillage in the Gulf of Mexico, the Regulatory Authorities will increasingly require employers in major hazard industries including chemicals to provide a clear demonstration of organisational competence in the area of Process Safety Management, particularly at Board and Senior Management level. |

Based at the Wilton International site on Teesside, and part of Sembcorp Industries, a Singapore-based global energy, water and marine group, have invested almost £200 million in recent years building new and improving existing assets and further major investment is planned. |

| This consultation outlines the Government’ emerging vision for skills and explores some key areas where it would like to seek further views. It sets the context for the technical funding system and methodology consultation – A Simplified Further Education and Skills Funding System and Methodology – that is being launched in parallel. It will publish a full strategy for skills after the Spending Review in October which will set out in more detail how it intends to support our learning and skills priorities. |

| 06 Jul 2010 - Design Innovation in Plastics Award 2010 - Winners Announced for ‘Refreshing Design’ Award |

| 24 universities ~ 72 entries ~ 6 finalists
The theme of the 2010 competition, ‘Refreshing Design’, challenged student designers and design engineers to create a product that addressed economic and environmental concerns yet was innovative and ‘refreshing’. Interpretations of the theme could include, for example, a novel solution to an existing problem, saving overall lifetime costs, or a modification of a current product targeted at a new market, allowing an item to be rejuvenated rather than discarded.
The winning entries tackled issues associated with water conservation, sustainable fishing, composting, sports injuries, giving up smoking, and carrying back-breaking loads on building sites. Rob Holdway, a competition judge and Director of Giraffe Innovation, a leading environmental management consultancy, commented that “the quality of entries has doubled over the last two years”. |

| The National Skills Academy for Nuclear has recently been successful in accessing funding to develop a National Network of Simulation Training Centres, this is being done in partnership with GSE Systems and BE part of EDF. The aim is to have three IT based simulation Centres based on the control rooms for the APR and the PWR. They will be available for use by all employer members, partners and providers of the Skills Academy. |
