17 Mar 2010

Life Sciences and Pharmaceuticals Cluster Report for the 2010 National Strategic Skills Audit of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills

Three Sector Skills Councils, Cogent, Semta and Skills for Health, have collaborated to produce this labour market research report Life Sciences and Pharmaceutical Report: A Future Skills Review with Recommendations to Sustain Growth in Emerging Technologies. The report’s purpose is to bring together a sectoral and futures perspective on skills

The UK position in Life Sciences and Pharmaceuticals is a leading one in a global market. There is scope for a major engagement between the strong public and private sectors. The private sector, through Pharmaceuticals is the largest business investor in R&D while the public sector invests heavily in skills and research through Higher Education the Research Councils and the National Health Service.

A key focus of the report is workforce development and the critical position of technical and higher level skills. The report considers the demand for these skills in the light of the societal and economic drivers of change. It closes with recommendations that may inform policy development and targeted intervention.

The research has been produced as a component of the first National Strategic Skills Audit of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills in 2010. It is one of six cluster reports focused on the emerging technologies identified in the New Industry; New Jobs and Jobs of the Future papers from Government during 2009.

We at Cogent are grateful to our partner Sector Skills Councils in this endeavour: namely, Semta, Skills for Health
